The first-ever official Women’s Futsal World Cup delivered unforgettable moments and stories worthy of the best scripts. Among them stands the remarkable tale of twin sisters Irene and Laura Córdoba, two Madrid-born talents who transformed a childhood dream into a World Cup bronze medal. The tournament, held in the Philippines between November and December 2025, marked a historic milestone for women’s futsal, and the Spanish twins were absolute protagonists.
A Dream Born in a Madrid Bedroom
Irene and Laura Córdoba are only 22 years old, yet their futsal careers are already impressive. Both play for Futsi Navalcarnero, one of the most decorated clubs in Spain’s Primera División Femenina, founded in 1992. Their journey to the elite began together in April 2019 when both exploded onto the scene with the Under-19 national team. From that moment, their path was unstoppable: Irene made her senior national team debut first, while Laura waited seven more months, demonstrating patience and determination.
If you really think about it, it’s very rare for two sisters to play together in a World Cup,” Laura explained in an interview with the Spanish Football Federation. For them, however, sharing the court feels natural, almost inevitable. The real difficulty would have been if only one of them had reached this milestone.
Nearly identical physically, the Córdoba twins are very different on the court. Laura plays as a “cierre” (defensive anchor), a key position for the team’s defensive security, while Irene is a pivot, specialized in scoring goals and creating danger in the opponent’s area. One defends, the other attacks. A perfect balance that worked brilliantly in the Philippines.
During the World Cup, both demonstrated their exceptional value. Irene scored four goals in the 6-1 quarter-final victory against Morocco, finishing the tournament with seven goals total, among the competition’s top scorers. Laura, meanwhile, was named MVP of the opening match against Thailand. “I didn’t expect it. When you step on the court, you only think about winning, but that recognition motivates you and shows you’re on the right path,” she shared emotionally.
Bronze That Shines Like Gold
Spain, coached by Clàudia Pons, who has led the team since 2018 and won three consecutive European Championships (2019, 2022, and 2023), finished the tournament with five wins out of six matches. The only defeat came in the semi-final against world number one Brazil, who went on to claim the title by defeating Portugal 3-0 in the final.
The third-place match against Argentina was dominated by Spain, who triumphed 5-1 with an extraordinary performance. Laura Córdoba scored two personal goals (at 35′ and 40′), while her sister Irene contributed with a goal at 38′. It was a devastating comeback that allowed the Spanish team to reach the podium and write a piece of history.
Mutual Admiration Between Twins
Despite sharing everything from origins to talent, Irene and Laura admire each other for qualities they see lacking in themselves. I’d like to have more character, the strength that Laura shows, who imposes herself and always goes forward with great determination,” Irene admits. Laura responds: “I’d like her calmness. I experience everything at maximum intensity and sometimes I need that composure she has”.

After years of requests and advocacy, FIFA finally approved the creation of this tournament in December 2022, featuring 16 teams. Brazil demonstrated their supremacy with a 43-match winning streak and spectacular play, but Spain, Portugal, and Argentina confirmed that the movement is growing globally.
