Gaming Doesn’t Burn Many Calories. But Your Heart Didn’t Get the Memo

Your heart does not know you are sitting down.

That’s the part that gets me. You close the client, you peel your hands off the mouse, and your chest is still going, not the way it goes after you’ve been running, where your legs file their complaints and the whole body makes sense of itself, but in that smaller, stranger register. The body running hot with nowhere to put it.

There’s a study about this. An amateur player, in a laboratory, mask strapped to his face, the kind that measures what goes in and what comes out. His heart climbed from 85 beats per minute to 137 within the first ten minutes. On a fitness watch, that reads as moderate-to-vigorous exercise. When he cycled at the same heart rate, his body burned more than twice the calories.

The muscles never showed up. They were in the chair, not really involved.

What the researchers described was this: the spike came from mental and emotional pressure, not movement. The sympathetic nervous system, which handles flight and fight and general alarm, had fired without asking whether there was anything to run from. The body braced for something the body never had to do.

A systematic review pulled together five studies worth including, games like League of Legends, VALORANT, Counter-Strike, and others. Energy expenditure during play ranged from roughly 1.3 to 2.5 calories per minute. Three hours of ranked play might add about thirty calories over sitting still. Roughly a quarter of a boiled egg. The researchers were not unkind about it; that is just what the numbers said.

The exhaustion after a hard session is real. That part no one disputes. It just comes from somewhere the calorie count cannot see, the concentration, the pressure, the specific kind of tiredness that has nothing to do with how far you moved.

The heart was in clutch mode. The rest of you was in the chair.
